How to Choose the Grinding Equipment Between Ball Mill and Wet Pan Mill?

In gold ore beneficiation processes, the ball mill and the wet pan mill are two commonly used grinding equipment. So what are the differences between these two types of grinding equipment, and how should one choose between them?

The ball mill grinds ore through steel ball media via impact and abrasion, often paired with a classifier to form a closed-circuit grinding system. This setup allows precise control over grind fineness, ensuring thorough liberation of gold minerals and creating favorable conditions for subsequent gravity separation or flotation processes.

The wet pan mill, also known as a roller mill or electric grinding machine, has a relatively simple structure and low operating costs. It achieves crushing and grinding through the gravitational pressure of rollers. The ground product is then recovered using shaking tables, centrifugal concentrators, etc., to extract free gold.

Comparing the two grinding devices: the ball mill offers larger processing capacity and is suitable for handling finely disseminated ores; the wet pan mill requires lower initial investment but has a smaller throughput and is better suited for ores with coarser dissemination.

Material Hardness and Feed Particle Size
For very hard materials (such as quartz, feldspar, iron ore, or raw ores from certain gold mines):
Choose: Ball Mill
Reason: The ball mill relies on steel ball impact and abrasion, offering stronger adaptability to hard materials and delivering better durability and efficiency.
For softer materials or ores already crushed into smaller pieces that require “crushing plus further fine grinding”:
Optional: Gold Grinding Machine
Reason: For softer materials, rolling consumes less energy than impact grinding. However, when dealing with large, hard lumps, it wears down faster and operates inefficiently.

In summary, if your goal is pre-treatment for metal mineral beneficiation—especially gold ores—and the fineness requirement is not extremely high, you may prioritize the gold grinding machine. If you need large-scale, continuous production with high grind fineness, the ball mill should be your first choice.
